You can uncross your fingers now…

… because the submitted artist/proposal has been selected – and it wasn’t me.

The location is the Greater Lafayette Art Museum and they selected a stainless steel guy – David Caudill. Nice work.

Oh, well. It was a good exercise.  I tried a method of construction I otherwise would not have tried. And I have prototypes that can go into the yard.

Now I can get back to focusing on other things.

fiberless mood

I’ve not been in much of a fiber mood lately. Although, with the cooler nights we’ve had this past week, I’ve been wearing more fiber.

Started some books last night as I want to have some for the Weavers Guild’s Fall Sale. Thought I might use some old sheet music for some of the covers.

Mostly I’ve had my head stuck in soduko – those grids are a bit addictive. Hmmm, with the willow and gut grids I do, maybe I can include a bit of math play….

The week in review

Just back from a lovely week on the Outer Banks – Avon / Kinnekeet, NC – hosted by some good friends from Cincinnati.  Didn’t do anything fiberwise, except to find a nice, long-sleeved silk shirt to use this winter. Lots of beach-walking after Tropical Storm Gabrielle blew through. Collected some nice shells and too much sun on my legs during a sailing outing. Ate and drank my way through the week. Read a book. Laughed a lot. Relaxed.

No news yet regarding the success of last week’s finger crossing….

You are invited!

By now you are probably tired of hearing about the ORBS installation at the Indianapolis Art Center. It is still there – a bird or something has started nesting in one of the orbs, the big guy has shifted a bit and a small one popped out of its resting place (we had overlooked securing him – he’s in for good now), but that is all so far.

What is new is the official ‘unveiling’ – strange term since there is no way on earth the whole thing can be veiled! – that will happen Friday, Sept 14, 5-9pm. Fellow artist Bonnie Zimmer will be in attendance; unfortunately, I will not be able to make the reception. There are all sorts of other exhibits and artists being highlighted that same night – it should be a wonderful wild time. Address and directions can be found at the link above. If you find yourself at the reception, raise a glass for me!

A winter walk-through with the artists is being planned for the afternoon of Friday, February 15, 2008 followed by a random weave workshop the following day. Winter should be a nice time to see all the orbs.

The installation will remain in the sculpture garden for up to two years. Unless the pieces deteriorate a lot faster than we think they will. So, you have plenty time to enjoy the work. In all seasons and weather. I hope you get a chance to do so!

RFP or bust!

If the internet does what it promises, I’ve just made a deadline.

A couple weeks ago an email came through with an RFP (Request For Proposal) to create a sculpture around the entrance of an art museum. The sculpture had to be functional (as a shield from the elements above the doorway) as well as durable.

Well, I did some trial runs on a couple ideas with various materials, settled on one that I think will work out well, and tracked down budget information. All this in between getting ready for and going to the wedding. The deadline for submission is now a minute away as I type this. So, as long as my emails got delivered, I should be fine. Some large picture files had me worried – had to separate them out to get them through.

Only have to wait 10 days to find out which proposal/artist gets selected. The turn-around time is really short for the actual work, too. If I ‘get the job’, I’ll be busy for the next two months – the sculpture needs to be installed by November 21.

I’ll fill in all the details after the 14th – don’t want to influence anything, one way or the other.

Fingers crossed!

Wedding pics!

Well, I couldn’t wait. Wedding pics are up! As well as some from the bbq on Saturday and the rehearsal/dinner on Friday. During the wedding we were at a disadvantage as far as position of the sun was concerned, so a lot of those pics are washed out. And I didn’t start pics until after the grandmothers and mothers were seated.

Trust me – Sam was gorgeous, her dress was lovely, the flowers were such soft rose and tan and ivory colors. All was perfect and breathtaking.

A Wedding!

Happy Labor Day!

We celebrated the wedding of our youngest son this weekend. Lots of family time, getting to know our new daughter-in-law’s relatives, enjoying friends and reveling in the adultness of our sons.

My love and I were a bit involved with the whole celebration: we made the programs for the ceremony and then assembled them into fans – which were very much needed and appreciated, hosted the traditional rehearsal dinner*, brought ribs** to the family bbq on Saturday, found the appropriate lights*** for keeping the outdoor reception lit at night, and made sure everyone was kept ‘watered’ at the reception.

The  bridal couple – I think mostly the bride – did an incredible job of planning – all the little details made the setting and event just perfect. The MOB – Mother of the Bride –  kept the plans moving whenever it looked like the kids had stalled. The two fathers, FOB and FOG, were pillars of peace and assurance throughout.

Will get to more pics later – I wound up not taking many, but others will be sending them my way (as David M has already done with the bbq ones linked above – thanks!).

Overall, it was a lovely weekend. The weather was absolutely perfect – sunny, warm but not terribly hot, delightful  evenings. All major crises were averted – only minor ones snuck in and were coolly dealt with. The bride was gorgeous (she always is!) and the groom seemed to be floating in air the whole time. The two little nieces of the bride took the dance floor spotlight with their amazing moves – I didn’t know a body could do some of those things! There was a wonderful mingling of families and friends. Just perfect in every respect.

The newlyweds head to Spain for their honeymoon – it is such a delight to see them so happy.

Will fill in more details as I put up pics. Must get on to another major project right away.

* Groom Greg planned the menu for the rehearsal dinner (which was held at Sergio’s in University Circle, Cleveland and which is where he is the Kitchen Manager and Sam is their top waitress): squash blossoms stuffed with soft yummy cheeses, chorizo boracho (Spanish sausage on grilled bread), spinach pies, wedding soup, choice of braised beef brisket (with mango hoisin, baby bok choy, chiitake mushrooms and rice), seared Alaskan halibut (with herb roasted Ohio fiberling potatoes, fresh lemon napa slaw and sake butter) or fettuccine (with roasted tomatoes, button muchrooms, fresh garlic, virgin olive oil and shaved parmesan) followed by dessert of grilled summer peaches with Tahitian vanilla gelato, honey and crushed marcona almonds. Absolutely delish!!!!!!!

** Bride Sam first visited a couple years ago when we were having a family gathering and loved the ribs that her future father-in-law (FIL) was grilling. She asked if we would bring some to the bbq. No problem, except that her FIL had really not made the ribs – all he did was heat them up and get them crusty on the grill (my sister Miri had done all the cooking beforehand) and for this occasion we wanted to keep to beef ribs due to having her Jewish relatives present – all the ribs her FIL had cooked in the past were pork. A great adventure that resulted in finger-licking ribs – with no leftovers!

***Never fails that something will be forgotten – the tent rental folks didn’t think about needing lights for an evening reception… so Sunday morning we were checking out all possible stores on the east side of Cleveland for those round Japanese style paper hanging lanterns. Word Market is the place, just in case you need to know!
